2013-SEP-22- Sermon on 13th Sunday after Pentecost

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit!
We have three readings today. The first one was for the Sunday before the feast of Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the second – the parable concerning the evil workers in the vineyard who beat up and killed the servants of the Master who sent them to pick-up the fruits of vineyard. The third reading was for the after feast of Mother of God.

Сегодня у нас три евангельских темы. Первое Евангелие было посвящено неделе перед Воздвижением, потому что в пятницу будет праздник – Воздвижение Животворящего Креста Господня. Второе Евангелие было посвящено попразднеству Рождества Пресвятой Богородицы. И ещё на английском языке читалось второе воскресное чтение, притча о злых виноградарях.

It is a joyous feast today – the Nativity of the Mother of God. The one who is to give birth to the Saviour of the world is born today. She is the ladder that enables God come down to Earth to become Man.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
The Lord God, as we read in the Bible, created man according to His image and likeness. He wants us to become more and more like Him, to increase our likeness of Him. However, David the Psalmist says that having fallen, mankind became more and more like the animals, like beasts. The Saviour came and began to call human beings to repentance.

Господь Бог сотворил человека по Своему образу и по подобию. Он хочет, чтобы человек уподоблялся Ему. Псалмопевец царь Давид пишет, что в грехопадении человек уподобляется скотам несмысленным: «приложи́ся скотóмъ несмы́сленнымъ и уподóбися и́мъ» (Пс. 48,13). Человек перестал быть человеком и стал зверем.

Today we have two readings that give us edification concerning inevitable trials. First, we have the reading from 1st Epistle to Corinthians, Chapter 3 where St Paul writes about how we build the work of our salvation and using different materials: some use precious stones, others – straw. Our work will be tested by fire and of course, straw will burn, but what is comforting, he says: “… but the person will be saved even though as if is from fire.”

Today’s Gospel reading about the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand gives us an image of the Church. The Church is fed not by bread alone but as the Lord said even in the Old Testament and quoted to His adversary, Satan in a desert: “Man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Сегодня мы слышали Евангельский рассказ о чуде насыщения пяти тысяч людей. Этим рассказом Евангелие даёт нам образ святой Церкви. Церковь «не одним хлебом живет..., но всяким словом, исходящим из уст Господа» (Втор. 8,3), как было написано ещё и в Ветхом завете, и эти слова Господь привёл сатане во время искушения в пустыне. Бог Слово Господь Иисус Христос не только учит Церковь, но и отдаёт Самого Себя «в снедь верным», как мы слышим в великую Субботу в гимне «Да молчит всякая плоть». О Таинстве Хлеба Небесного, Своей плоти и крови Господь объясняет в Капернауме, на утро после чуда насыщения пяти тысяч людей. Об этом мы можем прочитать в 6 главе Евангелия от Иоанна.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit!
The early Church used to have a different structure of the liturgy than we have today. For the readings they used to have an Old Testament reading then followed by the Gospel and then by Epistle. We no longer have Old Testament readings during the liturgy at all and we have reversed the order of New Testament readings. I would like try this approach in looking first at the Gospel and then the Epistle, which gives more practical advice about Christian life with the Gospel setting the tone.

Смирение и вера капернаумского сотника, о которых мы слышали в сегодняшнем Евангельском чтении, дают нам пищу для размышления о Пресвятой Богородице, о Её смирении и о том, почему мы так почитаем и саму Деву Марию, и Её образ в чудотворных иконах. Сегодня как раз мы совершаем праздник Казанской иконы Божией Матери.
